We’re going to do something different tonight to help promote the American Cancer Society. The whole band is going to break it down a little, add acoustic guitar, some clean tones and piano. We’ve re-arranged some of the songs and the set for the Relay for Life show at the The Soundry in Vienna, VA. Doors are 7PM, The Hint around 8:45PM, and tickets are door only.
Lots of students are coming together as part of the Rafiki chapter to honor a teacher they’ve lost. We’re honored to be there. Come support the cause. Read more about it on Facebook ( this link is the FB event page) – please RSVP and pass it on. Proceeds go to benefit the ACS and this is a big fund-raising event.

We got a note from the promoter today about a contest for the Fest on May 29. From May 17 to the 27th, everyone who purchases a presale ticket has a shot at winning a CD and a t-shirt from a bunch of the bands (including us) on the show. Tres Cute, Scene Trash and Tuned In are all throwing in some prizes too. One person will win the whole thing, full details on Facebook along with the link for tickets.

We get notes from time to time asking about the artwork, so here’s a little bit about the cover of “I Am The Hint”. The album is a story that flows from song to song with over-arching themes of love, loss and passion, and we collectively loved the idea of flowers to represent that visually. Flowers are beautiful and hopeful, and almost always connected in some way with love and loss. Different varieties represent totally different things. We began searching obsessively for the right kind of flower for the cover.
We used exotic flowers in group shots, all the while talking to photographers and artists – it started to become more than we expected. At the last minute, sitting around a table looking at designs, Dave, our drummer, casually mentioned that his father is a photographer that sells prints. We checked out his website and Alan Magazine’s photograph of red calla lillies struck us right away. The flowers almost look hand-painted, classic yet passionate. We called Mr. Magazine and asked for permission to use his art and, after Tim’s design work, here it is:
From what we’ve read, calla lillies are very rarely red. The photographer told us he was surprised to find them (genuine red calla lillies, that is), and he grabbed a black backdrop the first chance he could and snapped the shot. Not surprisingly, it’s his best-selling print (or was at the time). They’re majestic and timeless – they usually last longer than most too.
“Like most flowers, the calla lily has a symbolic meaning. It is, ironically, associated with both weddings and funerals. The calla lily is symbolic of marriage and purity because of its white color and its trumpet-like shape, similar to a woman’s shape. It is also the symbol of rebirth and resurrection; therefore, it is widely used in funeral arrangements and planted in cemeteries.” (credit: Pauline Gill)
Tim kept the logo very organic, and the hand-painted font reminded me of some other great bands from way back. The spark is probably my favorite part. We wanted the flowers to be almost explosive and three-dimensional. When it all came together, I loved it.
